Summer League Tournament Kick-Off

Good Morning All,

The summer league tournament is due to start in a couple of weeks (Thursday 21st). This year there are a few less entries so I have adjusted the team numbers down to 5, each with 5 or 6 players. This will mean there will be 2 matches (4 teams) for each of the 5 inital rounds, and then a final to decide the overall winners and wooden spoon recipients. This means that each teem will play 4 of those initial 5 Thursdays.

The information on the teams, and the schedules are in the e-mail below. I still have to set some handicaps, and will need help with this as I dont have up to date info on peoples playing levels.

I need a captain to come forth for each team, whose main role will be to choose who will play each evening.- not that arduous.

And remember - rule number 1 - have fun ....

Neil

Summer Handicap Tournament 2022

1.Basic Concept

The summer handicap tournament is team event designed to maximise participation through the club with player participating from all levels.

The 2022 tournament is based around 5 teams each with 5-6 players. This will mean that each team plays each other team over a period of 4 weeks (2 courts being used instead of 3 this year). A grand final playoff will then be played at the end of the league period, between the top two teams to find the overall winner and the bottom two teams to award the wooden spoon.

The aim is that the all players will participate as evenly as possible, aiming for each player to play 2 or 3 matches through the main league period of the competition. Teams deviating from this format will lose points.

2. Handicap Summer League General Guidelines

Each team will have five or six players with mixed abilities defined by the organiser
Each team needs to select a captain to organise their team
Each team will play every other team
Matches are played on Thursday nights, with the courts from 6.40pm, which are pre-booked
On match nights, three players from each team will play, picked by the team captains
All players are given a handicap in advance
The starting score for each player, based on the handicap, will be calculated using the Excel calculator.
Players within a team will play in order of handicapping
Each string is played as 3 games, all three games are played even if one player wins the first two.
A game is played to 15, Point A Rally (PAR)
All strings must be scored / marked by another team member from one of the two teams involved.
The grand final between the top two teams with most points (and wooden spoon and third / fourth playoff) will be on Thursday 25th August.
The results will be updated on the Mycourts, if possible, or elsewhere.

5. Handicap Rules

Please note that for 2022 as there are many players whose squash level is unclear, then the organizers reserve the right to change the handicap number at any time during the tournament, in the interest of ensuring competitive, fair and fun matches.

If both players have negative handicaps, the weaker player has their handicap adjusted to zero and the stronger players handicap is adjusted by the same amount.

i.e. Player A on -20 and Player B on -15 will start as Player A on -5 and Player B on 0.

If this creates a handicap where the stronger player is -15 or lower (ie -20), the handicaps are adjusted again by working out the number of points A has to score to 1 point of B. A is then given a handicap of -15 and B handicap is adjusted using the ratio of points.

If both players have positive handicaps, the ratio of points A has to score in relation to B is calculated. A is then given a handicap of 0 and B is adjusted using the ratio. (However if this is thought to be detrimental to the weaker player, the option exists to leave the handicaps as they are)

If one player has a positive handicap and one a negative handicap which is lower than -15, the ratio is calculated as above, A is given a handicap of -15 and B is adjusted using the ratio.
All matches are American scoring (a point is won on every rally).

There is no setting at 13 all or 14 all, so a game is won by the first player to reach 15.

Dynamic Handicap Rule

Matches are always 3 games, with the weaker player's handicap changing by 2 points depending on who won the game.

Example 1 A -10 v B +4

A wins 1st game so H/C becomes -10 +6

A wins 2nd game, so H/C becomes -10 + 8 for the third game.

Example 2 A -10 v B +4

B wins 1st game so H/C becomes -10 +2

A wins 2nd game so H/C becomes -10 +4 again for the 3rd.

6. League Scoring

For each match …

For each game won, 1 point will be awarded.

For each string won, 1 point will be awarded.

For each match won, 2 points will be awarded.

So for one match the maximum number of points that can be won is 14

Maximum Participation …

The aim is for even participation of player within a team, rather than the same players playing each match, with the aim that each player will play at least 2 or 3 matches during the league (as there are a total of 4 x 3 = 12 strings to play for each team) .

To enforce this, Penalties points will be deducted as follows …

A team will lose 1 point for each player who plays only one matches during the league competition.
A team will lose 2 points for each player who does not play any matches at all.
A team will lose 1 point for each player who plays 4 matches during the league competition.
A team will lose 2 points for each player who plays 5 matches during the league competition,
